Thunder Bay History
Thunder Bay is situated on Lake Superior, at the mouth of the Kaministiquia River. Oftentimes, Thunder Bay is referred to as "Lakehead" or "The Lakehead" due to its location at the head of Lake Superior. Centrally located within Canada, Thunder Bay was initially occupied by French fur traders in 1678. The site was settled in the 19th century after the creation of two communities: Port Arthur and Fort William.
Fort William originated in the early 1800's, when the North West Company built a fur-trapping fort. Port Arthur, originated in the 1850's as a silver mining settlement. Both communities prospered in the early 1870's due to silver strikes in the area and with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Throughout the years, there has been a rivalry between the two communities until they were officially amalgamated in 1970.
Thunder Bay is the largest port in Ontario, and the sixth largest port in Canada. It is considered one of the largest grain handling ports worldwide and is a large contributor to Canada's forestry industry.
Thunder Bay has two post-secondary institutions: Lakehead University and Confederation College.
